Urban Traces Remix | 2007

A project for a class I taught at Carnegie Mellon University School of Design. My goal was to have students experiment with ways to represent and remix physical traces of human activity they discover and record in the built (urban) environment; after crafting an object in the studio, they re-insert it and document it “in context.” I presented “find, record, remix” as a conceptual frame for the project, and I introduced methods of observing physical traces based on a chapter in Inquiries for Design by John Zeisel. Below are images documenting one of the student projects, in which sandbags anchoring temporary traffic signs are transformed into watchful urban spirits.
